Phrase, Caluse and Sentence

Sometimes we are confused to differentiate phrase, clause, and sentences. Lets see to make you understand.

  1. Phrase is a group of two or more words that express a single idea but do not usually form a complete sentence. It can function as subject, predicate, object and complement.
The characteristic of phrase:
  • Consists of two or more words
  • It doesn't have subject and verb, so we can not be say it to be sentence or clause.
 The element of phrase:
  • Head word, the main or core word that is modified
  • Modifier, word that modifies the head word
Kind of phrase:

Noun Phrase

Example : cozy room, smart student, wild animal

Adjective Pharase

Example : very good, so nice


Adverb Phrase 

Example: too quickly, very slowly, exactly here

Gerund Phrase

Example: playing basketball, going home

To Infinitive Phrase :

Example: to make a cake, to study math

Verb Phrase

Example : look for my ring, take care of my children

Presositional Phrase

Example : on the way, with all my heart, in the morning
